New World Wine Awards - 2009 Welcome to the seventh year of the New World Wine Awards, a unique international competition for wines retailing under $25. All wines entered in the competition are required to be available in a commercial quantity (over 500 cases). Each wine must also retail for under $25 in New World supermarkets on a day-to-day basis.
The New World Wine Awards judging takes place over two days. This year 3,252 bottles of wines were allocated their correct positions in the event and over 5,000 glasses of wines were poured and the glasses washed up. A team of 18 steward the competition, with the most popular member being the barista. Our expert team of 13 experienced international judges blind tasted and evaluated 1073 wines in eighteen different classes from 154 wineries. Four Associate Judges, all Liquor Managers from New World stores, were trained and judged alongside our experienced judges. Each wine is judged solely on its merits. A panel of three judges individually assess each wine and score it using the international 20 point system. Bronze medal wines score 15.5 to 16.9 points (Good to Good plus), Silver medal wines score 17 to 18.4 points (Very Good to Very Good plus) and Gold medal wines score 18.5 and above (Excellent to Superb). This year 552 wines were awarded medals with Gold medals being awarded to 36 entries. Silver medals were awarded to 136 wines and 380 wines received Bronze medals. These results reflect the great buying potential in wines under $25. At the conclusion of the competition all of the judges collectively retasted the best wine in each category and from these wines selected the Best Red Wine, the Best White Wine and the Best Sparkling Wine (Best Bubbles) of the show. |
